Aspirations of Atlas, a 9'H work is located just south of the William & Florence Schmidt Art Center.
Born in East St. Louis, Terrence Karpowicz earned a B.A. from Albion College in Michigan in 1970 and an M.F.A. degree from the University of Illinois where he was a Fulbright Hays Fellow. He has taught at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Illinois at Chicago, and was awarded the Frank Logan Medal and Prize by the Art Institute in 1974, as well as other awards.
Karpowicz writes: "I am particularly drawn to tension at the point of contact between disparate materials. By joining irregular, organic materials, to machine-tooled geometric shapes of metal, I can create actual or implied kinetic relationships among the elements of the sculpture."
He was a co-founder of the Pier Walk outdoor sculpture exhibit at Navy Pier in 1995 and the co-director for the first five years. Karpowicz has shown in over 100 galleries throughout the United States and his work is held in many private, public, corporate and museum collections.
This work was specifically commissioned for this site.
