Reach by Archie Held

Rotate Scuplture: LEFT  RIGHT

Title: Reach

by Archie Held

Material: Bronze and Stainless Steel

At the top of this 14-foot sculpture is a pool of water that overflows, creating a flow of water down the sides of the sculpture.

College Foundation Gift: Lucille Schmidt Barton

Listen to a winning podcast on Reach by SWIC student Sascha Duran!

First Impressions:

  • What do you see?
  • How do all the parts fit together?
  • Do you like it? Why or why not?

What words describe the sculpture? Add your own words too.

Other Questions:

  • This sculpture has a living component. How does that make it different from the others?
  • What do you think the artist meant when he named the sculpture "Reach"? Does "Reach" mean to reach up or down? Does it mean to reach beyond what we can touch?
  • What does this sculpture make you think about?
  • The artist put something soft and flowing (the water) against something hard (bronze and stainless steel). What effect does that create?
  • If you were to give it a new title, what would you call it?
  • The light and shadows help to define the form. Look at the light and shadows as you look at the sculpture. What effect is created by the light surface of the sculpture under the water next to the darker surface?
  • Look at the sculpture. The structure encourages you to look up; the water takes your eye down. Do you think the movement is gentle and quiet?
  • If you were to describe this to someone who cannot see, what would you say? What words would you use?
  • Who in your family would like this sculpture? Why do you think they would like it?
  • If you were told that this sculpture was purchased for your town, where would you place it? What would be the best place for it? In a garden? In front of a building? If so, what kind of building?
